Based on the previous work of Ballard and Taing that showed PPPDTA was suitable for emulsion RAFT polymerisation of styrene, PPPDTA was selected as the first RAFT agent to be studied. PPPDTA was synthesised using the following procedure based on the work of Thang. The reaction scheme is outlined below. Rather than using a column chromatographic technique in the purification process as described by Thang, the crude PPPDTA was recrystallised from hexane/diethyl ether. NMR spectra (1H and 13C) of the final product were collected with the 1H-NMR spectra revealing around 1% impurities in the sample. [1]
